Build the most sustainable gear on the mountain

Skiers and snowboarders around the world are witnessing dramatic changes in snowpack, shorter winter seasons and more erratic snowfall. Snow sports manufacturers are doubly impacted: they are both passionate about these sports, and reliant on them for their livelihoods.

Materials like carbon fiber and Titanal can provide skis, boards, and poles with improved performance characteristics, but they also mean that the gear has a high carbon footprint.

Our bio-based reinforcements have been used to replicate the performance of skis using glass, carbon fiber, and Titanal, but with significantly lower CO2 impact. This makes our materials ideal for brands looking to deliver their signature ride in a more sustainable way.

CYCLING

Lower the footprint of carbon bikes, not their performance

As consumer demand and governmental regulations increasingly favor sustainable mobility solutions, the cycling market continues to grow. This is putting bicycle manufacturers in a position where they need to take a hard look at their own carbon footprint. A 2021 sustainability report from Trek showed that over 3/4 of the emissions of a Madone carbon bicycle come from carbon-fiber components such as the frame, fork and others.

Until now, natural fibers have not provided the performance needed to meet stringent demands in this market. SCALE’s BIO|Power™️ and BIO|Control™️ materials can be used together with carbon fiber and other alternative materials to reduce emissions without sacrificing the light-weight performance cyclists crave.

Improved ride quality

Better vibration damping changes shock transmission through the frame

Better stiffness to weight

For lighter-weight components, and the ability to tune stiffness characteristics

Improved
durability

Less brittle, low density fibers increase wall thickness to better resist impacts

Build gear athletes love, in a more sustainable way

From dedicated weekend warriors to Olympic champions, equipment that performs is a must. This makes carbon and glass composites the favored materials for board sports, racket and paddle sports, and stick sports like golf and hockey.

But carbon fiber not only has a massive environmental footprint in production, it’s very brittle—meaning sticks, paddles, and other equipment break much more easily, only to quickly end up in landfill.

Durability is a cornerstone of sustainability. Our BIO|Power and BIO|Control materials also improve impact performance, shock damping, and other durability issues as well as reducing greenhouse emissions.

Better impact resistance

Less brittle, low density fibers increase wall thickness to better resist impacts

Smoother performance

Bio-based vibration and shock absorption, reducing stress on the body

Lighter weight construction

Improved flexural stiffness reduces raw material use and improves durability

automotive and mobility

Cut vehicle emissions with natural lightweighting

With mandates in the European Union and a growing number of American states for zero-emissions vehicles by 2035, automotive manufacturers are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon footprint.

Slashing vehicle weight helps meet these goals: a 10% weight reduction for cars improves fuel economy by 6%, or increases electric vehicle driving range by 14%. However, manufacturers who turn to carbon fiber for lightweighting can double or even triple part costs, and front-load extra tons of CO2 into the environment.

SCALE’s materials can provide the same weight reduction with less cost. What’s more, at an average of 1 kilo of greenhouse emissions per kilo of material produced, our reinforcements can also reduce the environmental impact of raw materials versus carbon fiber, steel and aluminum.
